“Immersive, disruptive, engaged, OTT, multiscreen, 4K and delivering the future” were just a few buzz words. Marketing pure! From 12-16 September Amsterdam was floodded with broadcast professionals from all over the world who visited one of the biggest broadcast tradeshows, IBC.

Although Divitel did not have its own booth, we were clearly visible through some of our business partners. For example, at the Harmonic booth we showed a highly innovative technique called ‘tiled streaming’, a technique developed by TNO and brought to life by Divitel. We also showed our IPTV platform ‘Divisio’; an interactiveTV solution for any operator!


Our people visit the the show for years now. We certainly do not pretend to have a monopoly on wisdom but since video is our passion (and video technology is in our DNA), we try to sum up a few things that might interest you as well:


OTT has really come of age now. At Divitel we deliver OTT solutions long time already, but we now experienced a lot of OTT providers that all praise their carrier and broadcast-grade OTT solutions. OTT is rapidly becoming the ‘gateway’ for how consumers discover, consume, and playback content regardless of the source. Since everyone goes over the top somehow, a lot of new CDN businesses needs to be deployed, either managed, licensed or the new trend is hybrid managed and on-premise CDN solutions.

HD becomes UHD

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a video compression standard, a successor to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding). HEVC is said to double the compression ratio while keeping the same level of video quality. It can alternatively be used to provide substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate. The video quality improves rapidly; we can get much more out of video (see the tiled streaming example above). And there it is: it can support things like 4K and 8K UHD. Moral of the story: the user experience will increase dramatically! Nicer, bigger, immersive and of course… multiscreen!

The cloud

Not only the cloud-based services are eager to replace broadcaster’s existing technologies and processes. But more and more elements of the entire workflow process are connected to ‘the cloud’, which offers more flexibility and accessibility everywhere. For example: we’ve seen innovative solutions that enable the delivery of broadcast quality video (including live feeds, linear editing, on-demand and 4K resolution etc.) through ‘the cloud’. Meaning a rapid time-to-market and strengthening of competitiveness.

Basically, IBC was about showing off the nice, new and often… unproved. But hey, what else are tradeshows for? Of course there’s a lot of adventure in incorporating unproven technology in your business.
