More end-users watch video content without going through a set-top box and cable TV operator, every day. Content is often available wherever there is a connection to the internet. Consumers expect to access both live streaming and previously-aired episodes, at any time and on any device. Services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Sling TV, have seen tremendous growth fulfilling this user need. Still, there’s a definitive opportunity for both content creators, as well as operators to tap into this shift in consumer behavior to attract new customers and increase retention on existing users. OTT is becoming increasingly indispensable in today’s word of video delivery.

What exactly is OTT?

OTT, or ‘Over-The-Top’, is a term used for the delivery of video content via the internet, as a standalone product. In the context of TV and video services, consumers no longer have to subscribe to an expensive cable or satellite TV service to receive their favorite TV shows and movies. Through an Over-The-Top service, TV content is available at any place, any time and on a wide range of devices (smart-TV’s, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, mobile phones, tablets, computers and more). For access to this content, a user often doesn’t need more then a broadband connection and a subscription to the OTT service being used. In this case, the broadband provider passes along the OTT traffic just like they would any other IP based traffic, with no control over what the end-user consumes.

Every service that delivers video content over the internet and bypasses the cable or satellite gatekeepers, is considered an OTT service. The most common forms of OTT video services are VOD (video-on-demand), live-TV or a hybrid platform, which offers both.

SVOD, TVOD and AVOD

VOD OTT services can be divided into SVOD (subscription VOD), TVOD (transactional VOD) and AVOD (ad-supported VOD) services. SVOD OTT services allow consumers to watch all video content on offer, in exchange for a monthly of annually fee, the most famous example being Netflix. A TVOD service on the other hand, will only charge you for the content that you watch. AVOD offers free-to-access video content, but monetizes through ads. Previously, Hulu would be considered AVOD, even though their current offering is subscription based.

OTT Live stream of Smartphone

Live streaming

A type of OTT TV service that is gaining a lot of traction recently, is OTT linear – or Live – TV. More and more broadcasters and TV content creators, are live streaming their linear video content through an app or web-based service, either free of charge or through a subscription model. Alternatively, paid OTT services like Hulu and Sling TV have expanded their offering with a growing number of live channels, allowing consumers to expand their TV bundle with additional paid channels.

What does OTT mean for your video business?

In a rapidly changing ecosystem, where consumer requirements and technological advances push each other forwards constantly, OTT video delivery is a key requirement for operators and an attractive additional revenue stream for broadcasters and content creators. By offering an OTT solution, telco’s, cable providers, satellite providers and other multi-system operators reduce the chances of losing customers to competing services, while opening up the possibility of teasing away end-users on competing networks.

Divitel doesn’t just design and build bespoke, future proof OTT solutions for clients around the globe, we’re also able to offer a complete suite of Managed Services for Pay TV Operators that free up your valuable time and resources, so you can get back to the business of running your business.
